On March 1, life-science-industry advocate Biocom California and similarly interested parties such as Circulate San Diego and OTTA United submitted a letter to Mayor Todd Gloria and Planning Department Director Heidi Vonblum asking to reinstate Land Use Scenario 1.
Scenario 1, which was under consideration by the City prior to November 2022, proposes to increase the number of allowable housing units in University City by 56,000, for a total of 83,000. If added back to the Draft University Community Plan, this scenario could potentially add well over 100,000 new residents and over 100 high-rise apartment buildings to University City.
On March 15, HSUC submitted a letter to Mayor Todd Gloria, Planning Department Director Heidi Vonblum, Nancy Graham, and other city officials to oppose this request. Community support for Scenario 1 is not evident, and current and planned infrastructure cannot support such an extreme increase in this area. Instead, Help Save UC has been advocating for a much lower density scenario, Land Use Scenario B, based on substantial feedback from the University City community. Scenario B adds a more reasonable amount of housing to UC located strategically near transit.
